The adoption of elephants in the wild can provide essential funding to the conservation and preservation of endangered species

THE MONEY, THAT ZOOS RECEIVE FROM SPONSORS WHO ADOPT ELEPHANTS, IS USED TO HELP PAY FOR THEIR CARE AND FEEDING

ELEPHANT ADOPTION PROGRAMS

Conservation is now a significant theme in zoo education. It is commonly incorporated in programs on vanishing species, as well as in a variety of other ways in increasing public environmental awareness. One important means that zoo educators use in increasing public appreciation of and respect for nature is by giving zoo visitors a personal experience with living animals. Connections between people and animals in zoos commonly include adoption programs.

Here is information on the usual way of adopting an animal. Information is from, eHow to Adopt a Zoo Animal, http://www.ehow.com/eHow/eHowPrint/0,1097,1692,00.html?src=pc1.

Zoo adoption programs allow sponsors to pay for animals' care and feeding.
1. Contact your local zoo to see if it sponsors an adoption or foster feeder program.
2. Ask about adoption fees. They range from $20 to $5,000, depending on the animal you choose.
3. Ask about adoption privileges - from certificates and T-shirts to visits with your adopted animal.
4. Choose the zoo animal you wish to adopt. The price of adoption often goes up with the size of the animal.
5. Fill out an application to adopt an animal. Mail it or bring it to the zoo with your check.
6. Go visit your zoo animal and have fun.
Most animal adoptions are in effect for one year. Renew your adoption and pay the fee annually
Zoo adoptions do not involve taking an animal home, so make sure your kids don't get the wrong idea about adopting an elephant.

Adopt an Animal at Chester Zoo, Cheshire, England, UK

http://www.demon.co.uk/chesterzoo/adopt/adopt.html

The Asiatic Elephant can be adopted at 2,400 pounds (80 shares).

How often do you think - 'I wish I could do something to help endangered animals?' Now you can. Please become an animal adopter. Take a share in the costs of Chester Zoo's massive animal food bill - over £300,000 per year - and play a direct part in the zoo's work.

Well over a third of the 500+ species in the zoo are officially listed as being endangered including several which are extinct or near extinct in the wild. Fifty years ago only two were in similar peril. That is the size of the task facing reponsible zoos. By acting as life boats, we help protect species that otherwise face extinction - and that's forever!

How it works
Anyone can join the full scheme for as little as £30** per year. Just pick the animals you want to help from the list overleaf, and decide how many "shares" at £30 you would like. You can have a single share (or more) in any animal species.

We estimate it costs £2,400 a year to feed an elephant - so that is 80 "shares". Smaller, less hungry animals might be a single share. (For the very smallest creatures, we have a "half share" at £15). Fill in the form, sending us your cheque or credit card details. Everything you give goes to a special account for animal foodstuffs. Everything. The adoption runs for a full 12 months from whenever you start, and we send a renewal reminder.

What you get
As well as the great feeling that you are actually doing something practical to help conservation at one of the world class zoos, you get a handsome A4 sized certificate, just ready to frame, four issues of our Zoo Life colour magazine, an attractive bookmark, and invitations to our adopter days. For every £30 "share", we'll send you two complimentary tickets. We show all adopters names on "thank you" boards at the enclosures.

**£15 "half shares" get a single complimentary ticket, certificate, bookmark, 'thank you' board mention and 'adopter day' invitations - but do not receive the Zoo Life magazine. **£15 "half shares" get a single complimentary ticket, certificate, bookmark, 'thank you' board mention and 'adopter day' invitations - but do not receive the Zoo Life magazine. **£15 "half shares" get a single complimentary ticket, certificate, bookmark, 'thank you' board mention and 'adopter day' invitations - but do not receive the Zoo Life magazine.

Great Gifts
Just think what a wonderful gift an adoption can be for children or for grown ups - and for a whole year! There is a special space on the form for this, and we provide a card too! You will understand that we often exchange animals with other zoos for breeding purposes, and - like us - they eventually die. So your "adoption" is for the whole group of each species rather than an individual animal. And if policy changes and we no longer have the animals you have adopted - we will tell you and ask you to select another group to help.

You can print out the application form, fill it in and send it to: Animal Adoptions, Chester Zoo, Upton by Chester, Chester CH2 1LH

Jacksonville Zoo

http://www.jaxzoo.org/

There are fewer elephants in the world now than ever before. Elephants are dying faster than they are being born. One main reason is habitat loss. As people begin to move to areas where elephants live, the elephants' environment gets smaller and smaller. The Jacksonville Zoological Gardens in Jacksonville, Florida is doing their part to help preserve this endangered species by establishing a Species Survival Plan for the elephant. Sponsorship contributes to the care, preservation and breeding programs established by the Jacksonville Zoo.

The baby elephant featured on the Species Adoption Certificate is Rani (pronounced "Rah-nee") which means Princess in Indian. She was born on July 5, 1996 at the Jacksonville Zoo.

The Jacksonville Zoological Gardens offers a unique program designed to help offer the best for its animal residents. When you adopt an animal you become part of the wild and wonderful world of people who have the satisfaction of giving special support to the Jacksonville Zoo's animal collection. Why not make it a wild child?

While the animal you choose to adopt will remain in the zoo or aquarium, you will take home the satisfaction of contributing to the community and to the animals through zoo enrichment.

The Schoolworld Adoption Center, Adoption #29, Asian Elephant

http://www.schoolworld.asn.au/adoption/adopt029.html

What can SchoolWorld say about this very special addition that hasn't already been said. Ganesh is an Asian Elephant, a relative of the same elephants that once roamed from Mesopotamia (an area now known as Iraq), throughout Asia south of the Himalayas all the way to Northern China. Today only 30,000 to 50,000 elephants survive and are in danger of extinction due to loss of habitat. An elephant is a hungry critter, eating hundreds of pounds of food each day and is always a popular attraction at any zoo.

Ganesh is extra special. He is the first elephant to be conceived and born in Ohio in 10,000 years, arriving in this world on 15 March, 1998. He is no stranger to stardom, with books and videos being written and produced on his growing up and his exploits.

For your adoption of Ganesh, our Asian Elephant, the school receives the following: a certificate of adoption sent to the school, a fact sheet describing the animal, a color photograph of the animal, the class/school name on the zoo's adopt board, a receipt for the full amount of the sponsorship.

Adoption Cost = $30.00 US
Adoption Period = One Year

To adopt this animal, please EMail SchoolWorld with your intention to do so. SchoolWorld will advise the facility that the animal is to be adopted and make the necessary arrangements between the school and the facility. As our adopted animals may come from many different countries please also contact SchoolWorld for exchange rates on the different adoption fees allocated. SchoolWorld will provide contact names and addresses of the faciltity concerned and all fees for adoption will be payable directly to the facility by the school concerned.

Care for the Wild

http://www.careforthewild.org/index.html

Care for the Wild International runs an Elephant Adoption Programme in co-operation with Daphne Sheldrick, http://www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org, who has an elephant orphanage in Nairobi.

When very young orphans are found they are taken to Daphne Sheldrick's orphanage in Nairobi National Park. They need 24 hour care and have to be fed every three hours, even through the night. Daphne has developed a wonderful milk formula that provides all of the nutrients that young elephants require and over her many years of experience has developed the knowledge to give even new born orphans a fighting chance.

At around a year old the weaning process begins and when the young orphans reach approximately two years they are taken to Tsavo East National Park to begin the gradual process of rehabilitation into the wild herds of the park. It is at that time they may be added to our adoption programme.

Six of the orphan elephants in Tsavo are currently on our adoption programme. The orphans are taken into the bush every day by their dedicated keepers, where they are able to meet up with wild elephant groups. They are able to play with other young elephants and learn the vital communication skills that they will need when finally, around the age of 10 years, they will leave to join the wild herds. This adoption scheme has supported lots of elephants during their transition back to the wild and many come back to visit the younger orphans and the keepers from time to time

By supporting this wonderful adoption program, you are not only contributing towards the care of the orphan you choose to adopt, you are also supporting the care of other young orphaned elephants and ensuring that they are given a chance to return to the wild. You are also helping with all of the vital anti-poaching and elephant conservation work we do in Tsavo East National Park and throughout Africa.

Their are three Adoption Packs details:
Children's elephant gift pak is 14.95 pounds, $22.067 US dollars.
Elephant video gift pak is 24.95 pounds, $36.8337 USD.
Elephant bumper gift pak is 49.95 pounds, $73.7431 USD.

A personalized sponsorship certificate, A photo of your elephant, a bumper sticker which states, "ASK ME ABOUT MY ELEPHANT," an invitation for you, your family and friends to visit the Sanctuary on visitation days.

World Wildlife Fund Adopt an Animal

http://www.wwf-uk.org/whatcan/adopt/ad-home.htm

For years, elephants in Thailand were taken from the wild to serve in the logging trade. With captivity came segregation, leaving them with little or no chance to breed.

Since 1989, when logging was banned in Thailand, more and more elephants have found themselves unemployed - and unwanted. Many of the Mahouts (elephant owners) can no longer afford the upkeep of their animals.

Boualoi was one of these elephants in captivity, but with the help of the Thai Royal Family and WWF she is being reintroduced to her natural habitat - in the Doi Pa Muang Wildlife Sanctuary. The Sanctuary offers Boualoi the chance to establish a natural home for herself, and the opportunity to bond with other elephants. But before any release is completed, WWF helps to rehabilitate the elephants for a full year, making sure they can fend for themselves within their new habitat.

For just £2 a month, you can adopt Boualoi. Your support will enable WWF to monitor her vital first year of freedom with satellite equipment, and help us release more elephants into the wild. You will also be helping to fund the training of our field project staff - who ensure the elephants are protected over and beyond their first year of real independence.

In return for adopting Boualoi, you'll receive a certificate, a photograph of her, plus quarterly updates on her progress throughout the year. But above all, you will know that your support has gone a long way to ensuring she can live the rest of her life as it was meant to be lived - in her natural habitat. Your adoption of Boualoi will also help WWF fund other vital projects protecting the threatened Asian Elephant.

Adopt Boualoi for yourself or a friend, and help WWF reintroduce other elephants to the freedom they once knew.

GoNOMAD - Take a Load Off: Adopt an Elephant

http://www.gonomad.com/helps/0011/bassett_elephant.asp

You've just spent 3 days on a trek and time is ticking away. You only have a few remaining hours to pat and coo over the elephant that has lugged you throughout most of the journey. Ever thought of taking it home? The wooden or stuffed variety may be fine, but the real thing could be a little oversized for the average suburban block.

Adoption is still possible though. You won't bring a pet elephant home from Thailand but you will be improving their lives in the following ways:

  • Contributing to food and housing, thereby saving them from being a burden on their keepers (mahouts) and the subsequent mistreatment that they often endure. Many were formerly used as working animals in the logging and agriculture industries and have now been replaced by modern equipment.
  • Saving them from the illegal logging trade where they are often abused and fed amphetamines to boost productivity.
  • Keeping them off the noisy, polluted streets of Bangkok where their keepers sell fruit to tourists who in turn feed and pose for snaps with the elephants. Some break free and are a danger to themselves as well as pedestrians and traffic. As a consequence they have been banned from the city streets.
  • Protecting them from ivory poachers.
  • Saving wild elephant mothers from being killed when their calves are stolen and sold to be domesticated.
  • Healing elephants that fall victim to landmines.
  • Giving refuge to wild elephants threatened with the loss of their habitat due to deforestation.
  • For minimum donation of 999 Baht (approx. US$25) per year, you will receive:

  • A signed adoption certificate
  • Your elephant's photograph
  • WWF Thailand updates.
  • If you adopt an elephant at an early age, you may even have the opportunity to name your new family member. Get those baby name books out today!

And of course, there's no better way to improve the life of a friend, especially one that has carried you through thick and thin in the jungles of Thailand.

Amari Hotels and Resorts joins forces with WWF to save elephants

    http://www.pattayamail.com/324/features.htm

During 1998, Amari Hotels and Resorts worked closely with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in the "Save the Tiger" project. Signatures were collected in all eight Amari properties for a petition, given to the government, which urged action to save the few remaining tigers that remain left in the wild in Thailand.

Following the success of this campaign, Amari Hotels and Resorts will be participating in a new campaign with WWF, which focuses on the plight of elephants in Thailand.

The Asian elephant is now facing extinction. At the beginning of this century there were estimated to be 100,000 elephants in Thailand, now there are less than 2,000 surviving in the wild and 3,000 in captivity. The rapid decline in Thailand's tropical forest means that there are very few places where elephants can now live safely. Elephant World in Lampang is an initiative set up by the WWF in response to the need for safe habitat, where elephants can be protected from the dangers of deforestation and poaching.

Amari Hotels and Resorts will be participating in this conservation project by spearheading an "Elephant Adoption Program". Guests and staff at all of the eight Amari Hotels and Resorts will be encouraged to sponsor Phang Nun, 52 year old female elephant. Phang Nun was rescued from the north of Thailand where she had worked for many years in the timber logging industry.

Guests who "adopt" the elephant will pay Bt. 999 for 12 months sponsorship and will receive an adoption certificate, a photograph of the elephant and regular updates on her progress. It is anticipated that sufficient funds will be raised to pay for Phang Nun's rehabilitation so that she can live safely at Elephant World in Lampang. Amari hopes to be able to build on the success of this project and raise funds to help additional elephants in the future.

Every animal at the Saint Louis Zoo is available for adoption at many different donation levels. Asian elephant may be adopted on-line for $30 and include the benefits listed above. For other levels of adoption, or to adopt animals not included on the list below, please e-mail or call (314) 768-5450.

When you adopt a Zoo animal, your donation goes toward the animal's care and daily feeding for a full year. With the help of our Zoo Parents, we're able to put the money we save on food toward other important Zoo projects, like endangered species research, veterinary advances and new animal studies.

Should you wish to pay for your adoption by a check rather than doing so on-line, please make your check payable to Saint Louis Zoo Friends Association and send it to the following address: Saint Louis Zoo Parents Program #1 Government Drive St. Louis MO 63110. And if you need to speak with someone over the phone, please call us between 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. (CST) at (314) 768-5440.

An adoption makes an original, one-of-a-kind gift for any person who's hard to shop for! Plus, you can do it all on-line now. After you select the animal in our 'Shop,' we ask for additional information on where to ship the adoption materials, what name you want on the certificate, how the name should be listed here at the Zoo, occasion of gift, etc.

And remember, all gift adoptions can be shipped directly to the recipient, with a personalized gift card from you. Currently, the online store cannot process more than one address per adoption order. For multiple orders to multiple addresses, please place a separate order for each adoption.

Besides being a thoughtful, creative gift, your tax-deductible gift truly helps the Saint Louis Zoo with the care and feeding of the animals. Each adoption in the Zoo Parents Program helps the Zoo budget for important endangered species research and captive breeding programs. Please make a gift today.

If you have questions, please e-mail or call (314) 768-5450.

    Amarula Adopt an Elephant

    http://www.amarula.co.za/eco/index.html

The African elephant is the symbol of Amarula Cream. From demonstrating an unquenchable appetite for the source of our unique product - the Marula fruit - to starring in our international advertising campaigns, the elephant has been our inspiration from day one, and plays an integral part in what we do. But the future of this African giant is being threatened.

Once roaming in herds numbering in their hundreds, the elephants in many African countries have been all but wiped out by encroaching settlements, and slaughtered for their ivory. Organisations which have joined in the fight to save them need support from as many sources as possible if their efforts are to meet with any success.

We can make a difference! Amarula Cream invites you to join forces to help in the conservation of the African elephant. As you may already know, you can do this by downloading the Ellie screensaver. Not only will you receive monthly updates on the progress of the Pilanesburg elephants, your interest in the project will help to generate a tremendous amount of support for this majestic, endangered creature. Make yourself heard!

In recognition of the support already received, North West Parks Board has named its latest elephant bull arrival "Amarula."

Amarula Cream is currently involved in two elephant conservation projects: the first at the Pilanesberg National Park, and the second at the Makalali Private Game Reserve.

Check with your local zoo. Most zoos have an "adopt an animal" program. I have adopted an elephant in the wild and at the local zoo where I live.
